It is the biggest city in the state in addition to being the capital too. In the past few years, there has been major construction in the city putting in new buildings in addition to renovating old warehouses into great new loft apartments and condominiums in the section called the east village. A new area known as Principal Riverwalk is also making the downtwon area great with walking trails, skating, a garden area, bike paths and great shops and restaurants to visit.
If you have kids, the school system in this area of Iowa is one of the best in the country. The city has two private colleges in the area, Drake and Grand View University. Des Moines is also known for their Midwestern friendliness and the importance placed on families and the community. If you are looking to go back to a traditional place to raise your children but also have access to some top industries in business, this is a wonderful place to think about. It keeps the old fashioned values while at the same time is very open to new industries and technologies.
Another reason to think about moving to Des Moines is the reasonable cost for houses. The cost of living in addition to the low crime rate make s it a very nice city to reside in. In fact, in 2007, Forbes magazine named Des Moines as the 4th “Best places For Business and Careers” based on things like the cost of having a business, the cost of living, the low crime rate and the school systems.
