If you’ve lost money or experienced pain and suffering as a direct result of someone’s negligence, you might be considering ways to recoup some of those losses through the legal system. A personal injury attorney might be worth consulting with and ultimately hiring in this instance. But, with the sheer number of personal injury attorneys out there, how can you be sure that the one you choose is going to do right by you?

For the most part, provided your case has the appearance of some merit, a personal injury attorney should have no problem offering up a free consultation. In this meeting, you and the personal injury attorney will attempt to figure out if your case could result in any compensation. Prior to this meeting, you can do some simple web searches or even ask the attorney directly if they have worked on cases like yours and if they’ve had any success trying them. Since there are so many personal injury lawyers out there, it’s good to narrow down your choices to those with at least some experience in your type of case. It’s also important to be wary of opportunistic lawyers that contact you first after an accident. Most reputable law firms wait to be called.
Narrowing Down The Choices
Once you’ve narrowed you’re your choices, it’s time to briefly interview your potential personal injury attorney. Ask them questions like:
1. Have you been certified to practice this type of law by reputable organizations or agencies?
2. Are you certified to practice law in this state or municipality?
3. Are you the lawyer who will be working on my case?
4. What are the credentials of the person who will be working on my case if it isn’t you?
5. Have you litigated other suits similar to mine? Did you win those lawsuits?
6. In your opinion, do you think I stand to gain financially from this lawsuit and if so, how much money do you think I could win?
7. Do you keep a record of your past cases and have any of your judgments been published?
8. Have you ever been fined, disciplined or banned from practicing law by any state bar association?
9. Do you carry malpractice insurance?
10. Will you charge me a fee for your services regardless of whether or not my case wins or results in a settlement of some kind?
Keep in mind that these questions come up every day for lawyers meeting with new clients and any lawyer worth hiring will not have any problem with your asking or with their answering them. The relationship you cultivate with your personal injury attorney needs to be based on trust. So, before you officially sign on to work with a personal injury attorney, be sure to take some time to weigh the proposed arrangement.
