Car crashes cause hundreds of thousands of deaths every year across the world. Over 40,000 Americans die in car crashes every year. In 2002, the number of deaths on the road in America was 43,005. Contact a road traffic accident specialist if you have been injured in a car accident that wasn’t your fault.

What are the leading causes of car accidents?

Negligent Drivers
Driver negligence may manifest in many forms. It could be drunk driving, inexperience or aggression.

One of the most common instances of negligent driving is that of rubbernecking, or turning your head to look at distractions in the road. It is illegal to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol in the US and the UK. This is considered as a criminal offense and is not taken lightly. 40% of deaths on the road are attributed to alcohol. Inexperienced drivers who aren’t accompanied by an adult with a valid driving license also contribute to car accidents. 25% of accidents on the road involve a teenager. Aggressive driving like lane hopping and getting too close to other road users is another way in which accidents are caused.

The Vehicles
Defective auto parts, vehicle design, and/or car maintenance are also major causes of car accidents. A car with a bad design might be more likely to get damaged and the driver die. For example, SUV designs make a car less stable on the road and four times more likely to rollover in an accident as compared to passenger cars.

Weather and the roads
It is understandable that this cause isn’t really something man can have any control of. however you should take the weather into consideration and choose how and if you should drive as appropriate in extreme weather.

How can I avoid car accidents?
To avoid as many accidents as possible, you should always drive responsibly. Take an experienced driver with you if you have only just got your licence. Never drive after drinking alcohol. Do not get distracted by sights on the road when you are driving. make sure you park up in a safe place if you do have to get out. make sure you are prepared for any extreme weather conditions before going on long journeys. Make sure and check your vehicle for any problems even before you hit the road. Preparation means prevention when it comes to road accidents.
