The Chief Justice admonished about thirty judges and lawyers who are involved in workers? compensation criminal cases. The lawyer's mustn't use the courts to mess around with public or individual rights. The judge acknowledge that this was a highly rare way to communicate, but that he was extremely worried about the publicity and delay in these cases. The court could not tolerate any more disruptions.

The chief justice did not single out anyone in particular. The justice called the conference after the attorney general made statements regarding several judges' actions that may have negatively impacted the state's ability to investigate and prosecute some workers? compensation cases. The chief justice indicated that the idea behind his conference was to make sure that justice is served fairly, and to hasten the judicial process. He said each lawyer and judge should give worker compensation related cases top priority, and the courts should put them first on their calendars. Special jury terms were called for to help speed things up.

According to one lawyer at the conference, the validity of the order was in question because it didn't have three of the five sitting justices? signatures. The order, which also employed a gag rule, only had one justice's signature. However, the chief justice went on to say that they could not try to sway public opinion using inflammatory statements in public and out of the courts.

He recalled both the judicial cannons and oaths of office that the judges and lawyers had agreed to be governed by. If any lawyers take issue with the proceedings or with the conduct of another lawyer, they should file the complaint in the appropriate place and with the correct committees. Judges were reminded of the importance of a speedy trial, as provided for in our constitution. They were also told that due process must be protected. The floor was opened to questions at this point, but the chief justice insisted that they be legitimate questions instead of complaints or criticisms about his previous statements. Those could be dealt with by the proper people at the proper time. For top-quality resources on melbourne personal injury lawyers make sure to visit them.

One lawyer, whose client had been indicted by a grand jury, wanted to speak regarding the contrast between media reports and public commenting by the prosecution. The lawyer said our first amendment to the constitution gave the media the right to report, but the Canons of Ethics made public comments by the prosecution inexcusable. One former administrator's lawyer claimed he had not violated the gag order, but rather had taken the necessary steps to protect his client's rights.

The attorney representing an indicted lawyer said he wouldn't give up any of his client's rights just to be rude. One lawyer said that by not saying something, his client may be looked at as guiltyAnother counselor said that the progression of the publicity given to workers compensation cases was increasing at an unstoppable rate. Another lawyer reminded the court of the terrible difficulties his client, an indicted lawyer, now faces as he tries to escape the negative effects of the bad publicity.
