Many people choose to commute into NYC for their employment but do not live in the city for various reasons. Union County is mostly flat and low lying with the Watchung Mountains situated in the northwestern corner of the county giving some elevation. It is a terrifically diverse county with most ethnicities and races represented there. Essex County is in the northeastern part of New Jersey and is the second most populated county in the state. There are extreme divides in Essex County from affluent suburban areas in the western parts and the eastern parts that are more poor neighborhoods. In Eastern Essex county it is considered more inner city with high poverty and high crime rate within the housing projects. The big city of Newark is in this part of the county. There are some good middle class neighborhoods in this part of the county though with diverse culture and ethnic groups residing in different towns.

Western Essex on the other hand is much more suburban and affluent of a county. A lot if important business people commute into Manhattan choose to live in towns like Essex Fells for the beauty, proximity to the city and the high quality schools. The average income of a person residing here is $150,000 whereas the average in Newark which is only 10 miles away is $25,000. This part of the county is less diverse with a bigger caucasian population and a very large Jewish American population as well.
